Researchers: Human Brain May Not Reach Full Adulthood Until Age 32

A new study suggests the human brain remains in an adolescent phase far longer than previously believed — up to age 32.

According to researchers, the brain enters what they classify as its “adult phase,” the most stable and significant stage, between ages 32 and 66. The next major shift does not occur until around age 83, when the brain transitions into its final phase.

Scientists say the changes occur on a molecular level, not simply in terms of social or emotional maturity. Researchers believe the findings could offer new insights into age-related conditions such as dementia, as well as why children and teens may struggle with certain types of learning during earlier developmental years.
