WASHINGTON DC - The Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are alerting taxpayers to an uptick in online tax return scams, where fraudsters file returns in someone else's name to steal their refund.

Last year saw nearly 300,000 instances of tax identity theft, marking the second-highest record. Authorities recommend filing tax returns early and securing an IRS personal identification number to prevent such fraud.
