PANTS WITH AIRBAGS INFLATE WHEN SENIORS FALL

Airbags are standard safety gear in cars. A Canadian startup now wants to bring the same idea to your closet.
The company has unveiled a prototype pair of “airbag pants” designed to protect seniors from one of the most common and devastating injuries: hip fractures. Built-in sensors are designed to detect a fall and trigger an instant burst of air around the hips, cushioning the impact in a fraction of a second.
Developers say the system is smart enough to tell the difference between a real fall and everyday movements, like sitting down on the couch or lowering yourself into a chair, so it doesn’t go off at the wrong moment.
The idea is aimed squarely at older adults, for whom a single fall can mean months of recovery or the loss of independent living. According to health experts, hip fractures are among the leading causes of hospitalization for seniors.
There are tradeoffs. The pants could cost as much as $1,500, putting them out of reach for many families. And despite the high-tech promise, they won’t be machine washable. A practical downside that could matter for the very people they’re meant to help.
For now, the airbag pants remain a prototype. Whether they become a common safety tool or a high-priced novelty may depend on whether seniors, and their caregivers, decide the protection is worth the price and the hassle.
