GRAMMYS SPLIT COUNTRY CATEGORY AND IT MIGHT ACTUALLY WORK
Matt Case - December 29th, 2025

The Grammys are tuning up the country category — and for once, the shake-up actually makes sense.
After Beyoncé made history by winning best country album for Cowboy Carter, the Recording Academy decided to split the prize in two: traditional country and contemporary country. Translation? There’s now room for both fiddle-and-steel purists and genre-blending chart climbers under the same big country tent.
The timing raised eyebrows. Some fans called it controversial, others long overdue — a reflection of just how wide, weird, and wildly popular country music has become. But one thing’s clear: more lanes means more artists getting their moment.
The 68th Annual Grammy Awards air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Feb. 1.
Whether you’re team honky-tonk or team crossover, there’s now a trophy waiting for both.
