They’ve been worn by everyone from punks to models to celebs like Selena Gomez and David Beckham, but they actually made their debut back in the 1960s in the U.K. as a work boot for factory staff and postal workers. We’re talking about the Dr. Martens boot, which has just been named the most iconic footwear of all time in a new survey.

The classic shoe faced some fierce competition in the poll of 2-thousand adults, beating out Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars, Nike Air Jordans and Ugg Boots. The research also reveals:

• Lots of us share a love of footwear and 43% would be happy to unwrap a pair as a holiday gift this year, but 46% admit they worry loved ones might not get the style right.
• Dr. Martens and Air Max top the list of shoes people would put on their wish list.
• So, what makes a shoe iconic? According to respondents, it takes a timeless design (50%) and quality materials (40%).
• Nearly a third (29%) say the reason some shoes are popular for so long is they appeal to different generations.
• When choosing footwear, it’s not just the way they look that matters. Half of those polled say the brand’s history is important to them.
