‘COCAINE SHARKS’ MIGHT BE FEASTING ON DRUGS DUMPED OFF FLORIDA COAST, SCIENTISTS SAY

Amid reports of drug bundles dumped in the ocean by US-bound smugglers and the subsequent washing up of massive amounts of drugs on Florida’s beaches, scientists are now turning their attention to a peculiar question: Could sharks be consuming cocaine?

Marine biologist Tom Hird aims to delve into this intriguing phenomenon as part of a forthcoming TV series titled “Cocaine Sharks,” set to premiere during Discovery Channel’s renowned “Shark Week” next week. Collaborating with University of Florida environmental scientist Tracy Fanara, Hird will conduct a series of experiments on sharks inhabiting the waters off the Florida Keys, an area where fishermen have allegedly shared tales of drug-influenced fish behavior.
