    Every child deserves to walk into school feeling like they belong. But for many students in North Thurston Public Schools, the start of the school year brings quiet worry instead of excitement—worry about not having what they need, about standing out, about feeling different. Last year, more than 1,100 students in our district were experiencing homelessness, and over 6,300 were living in households struggling to make ends meet. For these students, “back to school” isn’t just about supplies—it’s about basic necessities many of us take for granted.

    The Forgotten Back to School Needs Drive was created for those moments that often go unseen—the need for athletic shoes that fit, hygiene items, and everyday essentials like socks and underwear, that help a child feel confident and included.

    We ask for new items because there is something deeply meaningful about receiving something that is truly your own. That feeling of newness helps restore dignity, builds confidence, and allows students to walk into the classroom not feeling less than, but ready to learn alongside their peers.

    You can be part of that moment. By donating items or making a financial gift, you help ensure every student starts the year with confidence, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

    • Deodorant (Men’s & Women’s)

    • Tissues & toilet paper
    • Liquid dish soap
    • Children’s Tennis Shoes (Boys & Girls size 12 & 13)
    • Youth & Adult Athletic Shoes ( Boys & Girls size 1-11)
    • Boys & Girls socks & underwear (all sizes, kids – adult Large)

    Community members can support local students by donating needed items during the drive period.
